気がつくと青い空の下、マスジドが佇んでいた。
何を考えているのだろう。何を見て来たのだろう。
僕は聞き耳を立てた。しっかり君の声を聞きたいと思った。
今、世界では何が始まっているのか。この目と耳で確かめてみたいと思った。
2010年4月、バタリクのインド軍チェックポスト。僕は停車したタタ製４輪駆動車sumoの助手席のシートに深くうずくまり、目の前に広がる真っ白い雪を頂いたカラコラム山脈をぼんやりと眺めながら、この非現実的な現実に身を委ねていた。チェックポストにいた軍人がライフルを手に持って車に近づき、運転席の窓に首を突っ込む。そしてその大きく冷たい深淵な目からの絶望の淵を矛先でゆっくりなぞるような視線で車の中にいる僕を突き刺す。僕はぼさぼさの髪の毛を右手で掻きながら黒く汚れた顔を軍人に向けて、にっこりとかつ注意深く笑う。運転席のジミーが軍人に言った。
「だんな。こいつはカルギル出身のモンゴリアン顔のムスリムだ。今からここを通ってカルギルに向かわなくちゃいけねぇ。俺たちぁ昨日亡くなった友人の葬儀に出席するんだ。こんな所で足止めをくらっちまうと葬儀が終わっちまわーな。」
軍人は僕の顔を見続けている。僕は汚れたズボンのポケットから左手でビスケットをひと掴み取り出し、右手でその一片をつまみ上げ、口に運びながら小さな声で呟く。
「ビスミラ イル ラマネー ラヒム」
そして静かにそれをを口に含んだ。
「行け」
軍人はあごをしゃくり上げながらそう言った。それからチェックポストのクローズドバーをくぐり抜け、僕らはバタリク村に入っていった。
それは風の谷の小さな美しい村バタリク。
昔の話。10年前の事。
その村にはたくさんのあるものが降り注いでいた。
それは星ではなかった。
それによってたくさんの村人が亡くなった。
そんな村が地球上にあるのだ。

New areas opened in Ladakh: Turtuk, more of Pangong, Batalik, Chiktan.
These have now been opened:
Turtuk in Nubra Valley (ie pretty close to the Pakistan border, and about an hour's travel further than Hundar, previously the farthest point you could go to). It's Balti, which is a similar culture and language to Ladakhi. The religion of Turtuk is mostly Nurbakshi Muslim; some villages are Shia.
Batalik and the rest of the Dard villages. Now instead of going to Dah and Bema and then turning back up the Indus, you can continue along down the Indus through more Dard villages, and then cut south back to Kargil town. Dards are a totally different culture and language from Ladakhis. Some are Buddhist, and some are Shia Muslim.
Maan and Merak villages on Pangong Lake. You used to be able to just basically go to the edge of the lake at Spangmik and then you had to turn back. Now you can travel along to a couple of villages there. I think the newly opened area would include about 40 km of lake side.
Chiktan valley in Kargil District is an other circuit you can make from Dah and Bema instead of Batalik. Actually it's been de-facto open for years and I've been there many times with foreigners. For example, last year a local government leader gave prizes to the "Vermont USA" ice hockey team in a tournament there. But some more cautious travelers may have avoided it, being unsure about the advisability of going without a permit. I really like the Chiktan valley -- very quiet and off the beaten track, small narrow valleys, good ruins to explore of Chiktan Castle, and beautiful rock formations in the lower part of the valley. There are some excellent trekking routes there, I'm told.
実際は2009年末あたりから、徐々に入れるようになったみたいです。チクタン地区、バタリク地区に関しては通過するだけならパーミットは不要（ただし入境基準不明、外国人すべてが入れるわけではなさそう。） なおこの地域に滞在される予定の方は必ず複数人数でパーミットを取ってください。
